The LSG Charitable Trust Annual Awards 2019 was held at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom. Our President Mrs Iti Dasgupta opened the event by welcoming our Chief Guest ,the Hon’ble Former President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He was felicitated by Smt Sumangala Birla. LSG was privileged as our awards this year, were presented by Sri Mukherjee in recognition of outstanding contribution to the underprivileged in society.
The Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award was presented by him, to Kolkata Sanved in recognition of their outstanding contribution in working towards support and rehabilitation of women and child victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. It included a certificate of recognition and a prize of two lakh rupees. This was followed by a special dance performance by Sanved to showcase psychological enhancement through performing arts.
The Shanti Khaitan Award was instituted to support the education of the underprivileged who show keen interest and commitment towards continuing their studies.The “Foundation for Innovations in Health” was chosen for this award in recognition of their efforts in training rural youth and providing them with opportunities of future employment. This included a cash prize of 50 thousand rupees.This too was presented by Sri Mukherjee.
The Hon’ble Former President then addressed the august gathering and acknowledged the role of LSG in celebrating the empowerment of women. He also elaborated the concept, that India had an ancient culture of ‘civilization’. He said our ‘civilizational value’ needed to be upheld by ‘preserving the dignity of women’. He quoted World Bank data to showcase the fact that female participation in our workforce is still low. Sri Mukherjee elaborated that socio-economic empowerment of women cannot be left solely to the government , and should be converted into a social movement. We cannot tolerate abuse of women in the land of strong female deities, he added. He felt the root cause of gender bias is a mindset of superiority , where equality is needed. Indian women achievers in all fields are inspiring others, he elaborated. His speech was enlightening indeed and notable learning experience for our members.
