Living beyond the Self - Mita Vasisth - 16th April, 2010
Living Beyond the Self: Meeta Vasisht -- television, film and theatre actor who spoken with our members not only on her experience as an actor but also her of her experience in work with trafficed children and her thoughts on how as Indians we rarely value the rich legacy of our own traditions of farming, medicine, vastu sashtra, etc. A very thought provoking and insightful interactive session.
 
 
SWAYAM ............... The Self : Bhanumathi Narasimhan- 10th February, 2010
At the LSG’s programme with Bhanumathi Narasimhan, the Director of Women’s Empowerment and Childcare Projects, Art of Living, used simple everyday examples to explain spirituality. Members and invited guests listened with great interest as they looked for answers to age old questions on life and death, happiness and despair.
 
A trip to Maihar | Bandhavgarh | Khajuraho - 28th January - 2nd February, 2010
On our agenda was the thorough exploration of the wild and untamed heart of India in the virgin territory of the Bandhavgarh National Park that is teeming with wild life of every exotic colour and shape.

This was to be followed up with the detailed exploration of the 80 odd mammoth temples of Khajuraho to understand the famed mystical eroticism in the carvings that adorn the exquisite and intricate architectural wonders. So in a sense, we were to appreciate and evaluate the best of nature with the best of human endeavor!

We left more than sated, with our minds refreshed, our bodies rejuvenated and hearts light with the laughter we had all shared all through the long car trips

 
The Art of Happiness : His Holiness The Dalai Lama - 10th January, 2010
He came, he spoke and he enthralled all! The guests waited with great expectation, much humility and a lot of hope. Hope to hear the words of peace and progress from one of the world Greatest Philosophical Thinkers. He did not disappoint anyone. He even took a question from a child. The audience listened in rapt attention, while he spoke about tolerance, hope and and about financial focus on children’s education rather than huge structures in the name of some religion or another.
He spoke about his friendship with India and how much of Hindu philosophy he has incorporated in his own teachings. He smiled his usual benevolent smile and all were won over once again. His Holiness the Dalai Lama did conquer the audience he was addressing.
In Conversation with Hema Malini - 9th December, 2009
An epitome of gracefulness, sensuality, exquisite beauty and glamour, the embodiment of everything dreams are made of, in fact the unbeaten DREAM GIRL of the Hindi Film Industry, Hema Malini, met with the Ladies Study Group members on a wonderful, cool, December morning, at the Terrace Gardens, in Taj Bengal. In the informal interactive session, Ms Malini appeared both candid and forthcoming. It was indeed a wonderful experience listening to her talk about her film career, her role as a politician, her personal roles as a daughter, wife and mother.
 
 
The Meaning of Measure - 9th November, 2009
India is a storehouse of regional and folk cultures, art forms and crafts. One person, who over the past three decades, has been trying to highlight India’s vast cultural diversity through various design projects in different parts of world, is the well-known champion of indigenous arts and crafts of our country, Padma Bhushan Awardee, Rajeev Sethi, Chairman & Founder Trustee, The Asian Heritage Foundation.
South Asia’s leading designer and scenographer, Mr Sethi, spoke about The Meaning of Measure at a Talk for LSG members. His informative and insightful discourse supported with a fascinating slide slow of his wonderful installations was much appreciated by all present.
 
Art 'n LSG 2009 - 8th October, 2009
Art 'n LSG 2009 was an unique event turned into a very enjoyable and memorable one by the presence of the some of Bengal's most outstandingly talented and accomplished artists. Artists present at this programme included seniors like Ramananda Bandopadhyay, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Suhas Roy, Subhaprasanna & Sipra Bhattacharya and younger artists like, Paresh Maity, Ashoke Mullick, Prasenjit Sengupta, Partha Shaw and Chhatrapati Dutta.
The members had a wonderful time trying their hands at painting while artists helped and encouraged, sharing their individual styles and techniques.
 
Fashion with Ritu Kumar - 10th September, 2009
Ace designer Ritu Kumar invited Ladies Study Group members to her Couture Show in Kolkata, at ITC Sonar Bangla on the 9th of September 2009.

Ritu Kumar has had a long association with The Ladies Study Group. Way back in the 80s LSG co-hosted her fashion presentation at the HHI. LSG members have visited her studios and factory in Calcutta, and been part of the release of her book “The Costumes and Textiles of Royal India”. In 2003 she showcased her couture at Oberoi Grand Hotel, exclusively for The Ladies Study Group, where the three newly crowned Miss India winners walked the ramp.

The theme of this year’s show highlighted skilled crafts persons of Bengal. Members were delighted to be present at this special occasion.

 
Nutrition, Ageing and the Deeper Root of Health - 7th August, 2009
“Ageing, health, and longevity are all dependant on the accurate and effective communication between the different parts of the body; the harmonious unification of the universe inside each of us.” This is the message that Dr Ron Rosedale, MD from Denver, USA, brought to the members of LSG.
Dr Rosedale has brought together cutting edge science and deep nutritional knowledge, and formulated diet regimens that are hugely successful. After his talk Dr Rosedale had to answer countless questions on healthy eating and diets for chronic diseases.
Spirituality, Sensuality, Society............Today - 15th July, 2009
According to Padmashri kathak maestro Shovana Narayan "to be spiritual is to celebrate the self". From the point of view of her profession it is easy to see how spirituality and sensuality are related. Vedic teacher and spiritual musician Lady Shruti Rana too agrees that even in today's society, spirituality as well as sensuality play a significant role. It is the balance of the two that helps society thrive.
 
Aila Releif at Sunderbans - 26th June, 2009
When LSG learnt of the kind of havoc Cyclone Aila had wreaked in the Sunderbans; and about the extent of the destruction, we decided to extend our hand of support to the effected people.

We collected over a lakh of rupees in cash. And a whole lot of clothes and other useful items all of which was contributed by the lSG members.The ITC Ladies Social & Welfare Society also came forward with help.
On 26 June a few of our Committee Members and I visited a small island, Satjelia, in the Sunderbans. We took packets consisting of mosquito nets, candles, matches, zeoline bottles, milk powder, bisquits, sarees and lunges, to distribute.

For those of us who went on this trip, it was a bitter-sweet experience. We returned that evening bringing with us the smiles and blessing of some relieved faces left behind. It was a very humbling experience.

Javed Akhtar & Alka Yagnik - 16th June, 2009
Javed Saab began his Talk by pronouncing that this millennium belonged to women, much to the delight of the only women audience! In the following interactive session between Javed Akhtar and Alka Yagnik moderated by documentary film maker Sangita Dutta both the singer and the poet-lyricist spoke about the hindi music industry. While Alka sang lines from songs requested by the audience, Javed Saab recited his own poems and had the audience gleefully hanging on their words and extempore “performances”.
 
The Challenge of India - 30th April, 2009
Tarun J Tejpal has been hailed as one of the "50 leaders at the forefront of change in Asia". He became famous overnight when Tehelka.com, his online magazine broke the story about bribery in defence contracts. At present he is the Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka the weekly newspaper. He is also the much praised author of two novels, The Alchemy of Desire and The Story of My Assassins. He spoke in his very erudite manner about The Challenge of India and had our members engrossed in his analysis and observation.
At the end of his talk he signed copies of his novels which were on sale at the venue.
