The
Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award for the year 2007
was presented to Navanir - A Home for the Aged. The home has been
doing commendable work with regard to caring for the senior citizens
of our city. The award, consisting of a certificate, a citation and
a cash cheque was handed over by Priya Dutt to Justice Manjula Bose
who accepted the award on behalf of Navanir. It was heartening to
see a few of the residents of Navanir attend the programme inspite
of their age and physical drawbacks. |

| A woman of substances and

She
is much more than just a politician! This was very evident by the
way our guest speaker Priya Dutt spoke – candid, yet straight from
the heart. Priya unfolded the pages of her life in front of the gathering.
She spoke about her parents – and how she and her siblings were raised
very simply yet with a very strong set of values instilled in them.
She shared stories of the tough times her family went through coping
with brother, Sanjay Dutt’s addiction , and she also spoke
about the importance of raising awareness
about substance abuse especially amongst children. Priya emphasized
the need to take steps to increase the self esteem of the youth of
our country, since they are the future of the nation. |

| Pink Ribbon Day, A Breast Cancer Awareness

This event organized to spread
awareness about Breast Cancer, the most common cancer afflicting the
women of our country, had three eminent women from Mumbai address
our gathering. Dr Ketayun Dinshaw, Director - Tata Memorial Hospital,Mumbai,
Ms Devieka Bhojwani, a survivor and Founder &Vice President SAVERA
–Women’s Cancer Initiative , and Ms Archana Pillai Chairperson
, Ogaan Cancer Foundation. While Devieka spoke about how the
disease effected her life and family, Dr Dinshaw enlightened us about
the advanced methods of treatment and Archana in turn spoke about
the importance to going for regular check-ups. |

LSG felicitated Yash Chopra, one
of the most powerful people of the hindi film fraternity and representative
of the industry to the wider world, for his outstanding contribution
to Hindi Cinema. Thereafter, in a special rendezvous with Oindrilla
Dutt, Yash ji spoke about his illustrious career, his family and his
company that has stood the test of time and is the most sought after
movie banner in the industry today. |

The first programme of the new
year was relaxed, fun morning with friends at, none other than, the
grand old lady of Park Street, Flurys. Bachi Karkaria, author of ‘The
Cake that Walked’, a book celebrating 80 years of Flurys, read excerpts
from the book, while she and Usha spoke about the Calcutta of yester
years and the city as we know it today … a lot has changed, but the
heart of the city remains the same. |

The Taj terrace garden, on a crisp
winter morning, was a perfect venue for gourmet specialist Karen Anand,
to demonstrate four of her favourite recipes with the LSG audience.
While cooking, Karen also give useful tips on cooking techniques and
making the best use of various ingredients, sauces and condiments.
The culinary session was followed by a sumptuous lunch that was enjoyed
by all. |

| A visit to Presidency Jail – November

A visit to the Presidency Jail
was another first in the history of LSG. In this rare opportunity,
35 members got a chance to interact with the women inmates of the
jail. The women, most of them serving a life sentence, spoke to our
members about their lives inside the jail. To spread a little festive
cheer, organised short performances by Usha Uthup and Francis
Lepcha and we distributed food packets among the women
and children. |

In the second part of the programme
LSG paid tribute to the culture and spirit of our state, West Bengal.
We had Bickram Ghosh & Tanushree Shankar, in conversation with, Oindrilla
Dutt. They spoke about their work and how the younger generation has
begun to enjoy and appreciate fusion music and dance forms. |

The 41st year of LSG’s foundation
was celebrated by felicitating our dear past presidents. It was our
way of thanking them for their love, guidance and support, and for
helping LSG grow from strength to strength. |

| “India-Pakistan - Building Bridges of
Peace and Harmony: 60 years on… Insights from Pakistan” August 21

For the first time in the 40-year
history of LSG, a foreign delegation was organized. Three eminent
Pakistani women, Ms Ameena Saiyid Managing Director,
Oxford University Press (OUP), Pakistan, Ms Nargis Rahman,
Convener and Chairperson of the Karachi Women’s Peace Committee (KWPC)
and the President of ‘Falah’ and Dr Rukhsana Zia
, Director , Directorate of Staff Development , Punjab, visited
our country and addressed our forum. On August 21, 2007, the delegation
addressed the LSG gathering and brought to light the numerous similarities
and differences in social, political and religious norms between the
neighbouring countries.
The following day, the ladies, along with some of the committee members
of LSG, attended a seminar with the faculty members and MPhil students
of the Women’s Study Centre, Jadavpur University. Our guests were
also taken to visit a few NGOs in the city like Apne Aap and the Bustee
Welfare Society.
On day three, the delegation met Governor GK Gandhi and attended a
cultural programme at Governor’s House. They also enjoyed a cruise
down the Hooghly wherein Mr GM Kapoor of INTACH talked about the various
historic and modern structures on the banks of the river. |

Shriji
is the 76th custodian of the House of Mewar, the oldest royal family
in the entire world. His Highness spoke about the history of this
dynasty that spreads over 1400 years. He also spoke of the eternal
values, which will continue to remain the strength and inspiration
of the house of Mewar, however much the world around has changed.
At this event, our members got the opportunity to see the beautiful
palaces that have now been transformed into luxury resorts. |

The Oneness University’s
senior most disciple and Principal Advisor Sri Namann ji spoke
about the Oneness mission which is to remove all divisions
in whatever form they might exist and bring together all mankind to
oneness. He explained the concept of ‘Deeksha’
, which is a transfer of Higher Cosmic Energies for Holistic
Development of a person. Manisha Koirala shared
her experiences at the Oneness University
and how her lifehas changed for the better after receiving Deeksha.
Sri Namann and Manisha gave the gift of Deeksha to all present, at
the end of the programme. |

wellness and not illness. |

Through this programme we got
to see a different Rahul Bose. An activist and a social worker too,
Rahul delivered a very hard-hitting talk on Human Rights and Gender
Bias. He spoke about his work with NGOs like ‘Akshara’
and ‘Breakthrough’ and his own NGO called 'The
Foundation'. He also told us how important a part of his
life the game of rugby is. |

Medicine, Dr Ali spoke about techniques such as fasting therapy, Iridology,
Pulse diagnosis, hypnosis, herbalism etc. He also demonstrated a few
