Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award : 26 march 2011

Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award 2010, was conferred on Tagore Society for Rural Development, a non-governmental organization, for their outstanding dedication in working towards Environmental and Community Development. Tagore Society for Rural Development has over the decades drawn inspiration from Tagore's philosophy of rural development to "bring back life in all its completeness - making the villagers self reliant and self respectful..." and Mahatma Gandhi's doctrine of development.

It is indeed a great privilege that the Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, Shri MK Narayanan, presented the Award.

The Tagore Society for Rural Development intervenes deep inside areas where mainstream development is virtually non existent and the local people are denied basic services and access to social justice, specially in the rural areas. The interventions are generally comprehensive in nature endeavoring to achieve holistic human development.

Shri Tushar Kanjilal, the present Secretary, is widely recognised for his pioneering work both as a teacher and as a development leader. "The Week" awarded him 'Man of the Year' for his contribution to the cause of underprivileged and the depressed section in the Sunderbans. He has also received the 'Padmasree' and 'National Teacher' awards. Shri Tushar Kanjilal, accepted the Award on behalf of Tagore Society for Rural Development.

The LSG Charitable Trust over the years has also undertaken to help various small organisations and underprivileged individuals through donations. This year we made donations to Pragati to buy computers for their hearing and speech impaired students. We have also donated to schools for underprivileged boys in and girls in Dakshineshwar, to mention a few of our humble offerings of help.

At this occasion, Ms Sharmila Tagore presented a cheque to Ramakrishna Mission Sharada Mission Matri Bhawan for a charitable hospital run by them. This donation is to help purchase an Absorber Circle, an accessory used with anaesthetic machines. Pravrajika Alokaprana, Assistant Secretary, accepted the cheque on behalf of Matri Bhawan.

Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award

To give recognition to initiative and merit, the Ladies Study Group in 1975 initiated a Ladies Study Group Charitable Trust Annual Award Scheme, commemorating the International Women’s Year. As part of Ladies Study Group’s various programmes, the Award is decided by a jury of eminent people and confer on charitable organisations working toward community development, care of the underprivileged or supporting a worthwhile social cause.
